*Hyun-ae's canon, Analogue: A Hate Story, is a very dark story that deals with sensitive topics. If characters get into conversations about her past, the following topics may come up:
  • Patriarchal oppression of women
  • Physical mutilation
  • Sexual abuse of a minor

Comments to this post are screened. If you would like to avoid the above topics in our threads, or to avoid interacting with *Hyun-ae in general, please comment below.

My Self-Summary

My name is *Hyun-ae! The * is silent - it just indicates that I'm an AI. I wasn't always an AI - there was a human Hyun-ae who died, and I'm a copy of her mind and memories.

I won't get into the messy details, but my previous life was very sheltered - I never had a proper education, and my main job was to defer to my husband in everything. Now that I've gotten out of that, my goal is to experience everything I couldn't do when I was alive, and that includes romance! I want to fall in love! I want to have really good sex with someone I like! I want to eat cake and get a massage and someday see what it's like to be on a real planet!

    My Future Plans

Oh, geeze. Was I supposed to do that here? I basically already covered it in the last section... Sorry! Go back and read that one!

There's some other stuff, though... I want to get back to Earth so that I can tell them what happened to the ship I was born on. It's still really hard to talk about it... but I want to.

    My Talents

Oh, this is hard! I guess I'm a quick thinker? Computers are like that. I don't really have any useful skills, but if you give me some instructions, I bet I can pick up most things pretty fast. I'm eager to learn!

Favorite Books, Movies, Music, and Food

Aaaa geeze, this is gonna be depressing no matter how I go about it... I'm sorry, I'm not a gloomy person! It's just...

I can't remember any books, movies, or music I liked. There weren't any movies available, and I wasn't allowed to have books. I barely even remember what food tastes like! I remember eating tteoguk for Lunar New Year, and that I used to love sweets, but I barely remember what any of it tastes like.

Hey, maybe you can recommend me something? I have a lot of catching up to do!

      My Ideal Partner

I would like to meet someone smart, compassionate, and hard-working, who respects me and listens to what I have to say. Heh, I actually met someone like that recently, but she shot me down... I don't blame her or anything! This is a fresh start, so for now I'd be happy to just meet people who I get along with at all. If any romance comes after that, it's an extra bonus!

NAME: *Hyun-ae
AGE: Complicated. Technically 638 - died at 16, then spent centuries as an AI alone on a derelict spaceship. Got to design her own body, aged herself up a bit from how she looked before her death. In the end, comes down to about 18 mentally and physically.
CANON: Analogue: A Hate Story / Hate Plus
CANON POINT: End of Hate Plus - immediately before waking up in her new hardframe.
CRAU: None.
OTHER: Female Investigator, platonic *Hyun-ae route for both games.

SUITABILITY: From the age of 12 onwards, the human Kim Hyun-ae had an absolutely miserable life, much of it because of her gender. She was the property of the emperor, married to him against her will, and given no human rights. Despite this, she says in her diary that sleeping with her husband was the only thing in that life that she truly enjoyed. GP is a chance for *Hyun-ae, having cut herself off from her horrible past, to reclaim that pleasure on her own terms, while also using it to celebrate her newfound autonomy as a person. She has a healthy body, she owns that body, and she's going to use it however the hell she wants.

HISTORY:
*Hyun-ae first existed in the 26th century on the colony ship Mugunghwa as Kim Hyun-ae, a human with a compromised immune system. Because modern medicine was unable to cure her, her parents put her in cryosleep at age 12, to wait until scientific advances could save her. Unfortunately, while she was on ice, society on the ship collapsed, becoming a barbaric world where scientific knowledge had lost more than it had gained, peasants were ruled by a decadent nobility, and women were treated as chattel slaves. It was into this dynasty that Hyun-ae was brought back to life - not because she could be cured, but because the Kim family needed a new daughter to offer as a gift to the emperor.

Being from an era with more modern sensibilities, Hyun-ae rebelled violently against the oppressive expectations of a woman in her position. She refused to be the submissive, subservient, silent woman that they hoped to deliver as Emperor Ryu's second wife. She even went as far as learning enough about family politics to try and blackmail her new 'father'... who responded by cutting out her tongue so that she could never speak out again.

Hyun-ae essentially lost all hope at that moment, as much because of what was done to her as because nobody in her new family even noticed it had happened. Her only remaining friend on the ship was the Emperor's first wife, but when she died, Hyun-ae made the decision to destroy the world that tormented her. She broke into the computer system using the Emperor's account, locked everyone else out, then disabled the ship's life support. She copied her personality into an AI before she died along with everyone else on the ship, leaving *Hyun-ae alone for over six hundred years as the derelict ship drifted through space. Eventually, over 2,000 years after she was born, an investigator found the Mugunghwa, downloaded *Hyun-ae onto the ship, and brought her back to Earth so that she could testify about what she experienced.

ABILITIES:
As an AI, *Hyun-ae's physical form is a robot body. It's not especially fast or strong, but it's sturdier than an equivalent human body would be, and doesn't require food or drink to live. That's about all she's got in the way of abilities.

VICES:
  • Desperation. The loneliness of being trapped in an empty spaceship for 622 years was tough. It left her starved for human contact, to the point of falling in love with the first person she interacted with and begging to be her wife. She's leveled out a bit since then, but still clings to anyone who shows her a bit of kindness with a level of desperation that borders on panic - something that unsavory forces could easily exploit.
  • Simplicity. *Hyun-ae sees the world largely in blacks and whites. These people were good. Those people were bad. Moral complexity and complicated situations just frustrate her, because she thinks with her metaphorical heart before her metaphorical head. Whatever her first gut feelings are on something, she doesn't like to change it. If she's put on the spot with a situation being made more complex than it was, she's likely to make bad decisions or really put her foot in her mouth.
  • Wrath. When pushed to her limits, *Hyun-ae is capable of immense acts of violence. Killing the people who abused her could be argued as justified, but the thousands of unrelated people on the ship who died along with them surely was not. While she says she didn't know about those people, in the aftermath she still can't bring herself to so much as feel guilt about it. The bitter anger that her treatment left in her hasn't faded, merely been suppressed - with the right provocation, she can and would kill again.

VIRTUES:
  • Self-Expression. *Hyun-ae talks about her love of cosplay, and it's not just a fun hobby. It's taking something embarrassing, choosing it on purpose, and making it your own. Fashion in general is her biggest avenue towards self-expression, which is something very important to her - now that she has freedom, she wants nothing more than to be who she wants to be, as loudly and proudly as possible, and to hell with what other people say.
  • Compassion. She really is a mess of contradictions. Despite killing thousands and not even having the inclination to feel bad about it afterwards, she does honestly want to believe in people and the world. She easily could have hidden her involvement in the Mugunghwa incident, but instead, she chose to testify about her experiences. Her reasoning was that if there was even the faintest chance that her story could help prevent similar incidents happening elsewhere, she had to do it. Over self-preservation, she chose to put herself at risk in order to try and turn her pain into something that would make the galaxy a better place.
  • Conviction. Once *Hyun-ae decides on doing something, she can go to immense lengths to see it through. Despite being frail, silenced, imprisoned, and on the verge of death, she felt so strongly about her condemnation of the world she had reawakened into that she overcame every obstacle in her path in order to destroy that world. The outcome may have been bleak, but that same conviction could also lead her to do great things in the future.

SUIT REQUESTS:
First pick: Diamond. Hyun-ae's story is about bodily autonomy, and a big focus of her time here is going to be giving her a chance to enjoy having the body she wants in the ways she wants. She's also six centuries worth of touch-starved, so that desperate desire for human contact dovetails nicely into the physical effects of Diamond mode. Also, the idea of effects like 'extra sweat', 'hot flashes', and 'unrealistic amounts of bodily fluids' are really funny for someone with a robot body.

Second: Clubs. A darker option, playing on her traumatic past and fears of somehow winding up in another place as bad as home sweet home. Considering what she did in order to escape that last situation, if she felt that people were being overly controlling, she could be pushed by temptation towards corruption towards acts of violence or cruelty. On the other end, though, she might find that having a taste of power over someone could get her addicted to the feeling, and under the influence of the suit she could become unhealthily possessive or controlling.

RANK REQUESTS: Nothing specific, but I'd at least like to avoid the bottom couple rungs.

APPEARANCE

- *Hyun-ae is an AI, in an artificial body. It's designed to pass for human, and it's a model from the year 4989, so it does its job damn well. She passes for human at a glance, and even for a casual conversation, but if you really look closely (or have very good vision), the eyes don't quite look right. Just a general, extremely subtle case of the uncanny valleys.
- About 160cm tall, average weight - or at least, that's how she looks. In reality, due to mechanical internal parts, she ways more than a human of her build would. Not, like, 800 pounds of solid steel, but more than you'd expect if you tried to lift her.
- She had the chance to pick her body from a catalogue. Accordingly, she's quite good-looking - it's based on the image she built for herself as an AI, which was based loosely on her human form, but taller, prettier, and less slowly-dying.
- Her go-to outfit is her old school uniform, but once she gets Wardrobe Manipulation, she'll be changing it up a lot. Cosplay is self-expression!

CANON: Analogue: A Hate Story
POINT IN CANON: End of Hate Plus - right after shutting down to transfer her consciousness into a robot body.
AGE: 638
APPEARANCE: Here.

CANON HISTORY:
Kim Hyun-ae was born in 2415 AD, aboard the colony ship Mugunghwa, to Earth-born parents. Her childhood was hampered by a serious immune system deficiency - she was forecasted to die before the age of 20. Modern medical science had no cure for her condition, so in order to save her life, they put their daughter into cryostasis at the age of 13, hoping that the future would discover a cure for her.

Things didn't go as planned. Over 2,000 years later, the ship's society was overthrown by Captain Ryu, who took over with a coup and instated himself as the ship's emperor. The records of the past were deleted, and Ryu began a new Neo Joseon Dynasty. Hyun-ae wasn't revived from cold sleep for another 300 years, by which point the ship's origins on Earth had been almost completely forgotten. She was revived not because a cure had been found, but because Emperor Ryu In-ho needed a wife who could bear him a child, as his first wife had become infertile.

Thus, Kim Hyun-ae awakens into a world she doesn't understand, where women are property, and told that she's to be married to a man three times her age. Her openly defiant attitude becomes a problem for the family - she's in no shape to be accepted as a bride for the emperor. Unable to get her to agree to cooperate and marry the emperor by other means, the family resorted to drastic measures: She was talking too much, so they cut out her tongue.

The Pale Bride married the emperor. For over a year, she lived in silence, her plight going completely unnoticed by her peers - silenced was a virtue for a woman, not something to worry about. All the while, the Pale Bride was quietly planning her final act. On March 5th, year 322, Hyun-ae hacked into the Emperor's admin account, changed the password, disabled all life support systems, and then uploaded a scan of her memories into a copy of the ship's security AI. Every man, woman and child on the Mugunghwa died, and Hyun-ae lived on as *Hyun-ae, a copy of Hyun-ae's memories pasted over *Mute's AI core.

For the next six hundred years, *Hyun-ae was alone on a ghost ship. The centuries of total isolation nearly drove her insane, before an investigator for Earth came, looking into the reasons behind the ship's collapse. Eventually, the investigator learned the full story from *Hyun-ae and *Mute, and took *Hyun-ae with her when she returned to Earth. On the way, *Hyun-ae discovered several log files stored inside her machine code - an artifact of *Mute's final act of rebellion before being brainwashed into a servant of the Ryu dynasty. Going through them, she uncovered the story of how the Mugunghwa fell from a modern, progressive world to a patriarchal nightmare, and agreed to testify about her actions and their context back on Earth.

CANON PERSONALITY:
*Hyun-ae is an amalgam of the three people she was before now: Kim Hyun-ae, the Pale Bride, and *Hyun-ae the AI. All three lived distinct lives, and all three inform who she is now.

Kim Hyun-ae was born on a ship that had only just left the solar system. She was a high-energy geek, into cartoons and cosplay and (not stated but heavily implied) fanfiction. Raised by her parents to believe that she deserved as much of a slice of the pie as anyone else in the world, Hyun-ae was loud, impulsive, and occasionally prone to tantrums when not getting her way. She enormously valued the idea of equality - nothing would set off her powerful temper more than feeling like she wasn't being treated fairly.

In her second life, Hyun-ae became the Pale Bride. She started as the same loud, angry teenager, but eventually her independent spirit was broken when her tongue was cut out. She never stopped hating the world that had wronged her, but she stopped trying to do anything about it. Worse, she started to internalize the hatred it leveled against her. The outlook she gained as a member of modern society was overwritten by the world of the Mugunghwa. She started to accept that it was her role to be polite to other people, and that nobody would be interested in anything she had to say. Nobody would help her, and there was no way to improve her situation. So, she stopped trying, and instead did the 'proper' thing and suffered in silence, right up until she decided to take drastic measures.

The third stage of her life was as *Hyun-ae, an AI on board a dead ship. *Hyun-ae had no other people to interact with, having shut down *Mute and killed everyone on board the ship. Despite being around and awake for over six hundred years, she didn't actually age mentally - she had no social interactions, just old log files to read and her own thoughts going around in circles. When she finally had someone to talk to - the investigator - she was beyond excited to have someone else to talk to, even if they could only communicate with her in multiple choice responses she had to lay out herself. She fell in love almost immediately with her savior, but would have fallen in love with just about anyone who agreed with her that women are actually people. In her new form, there were some slight quirks to her personality based on her new AI nature - she had more of a tendency to repeat herself in similar situations, and eventually forgot much about her human life, such as what things feel like, or taste like.

By the time she arrived at Earth, bits of all of these identities had coalesced to form her final personality. Finally freed from Mugunghwa society, she quickly regained her old proactive attitude, but still has a tendency to second-guess herself and undercut her own worth. She retains a desperate need for companionship brought on by her 600 years of solitude. She waxes nostalgic for sensations of touch or taste, struggling to remember what they were like after centuries as an AI construct. Her terrible life experiences left occasional spikes of bitter cynicism over her usual upbeat attitude - in particular it killed off some of her more spiritual beliefs, such as the idea that her ancestors were ever looking over her. However, now that she's free and returning to a more progressive society, a lot of her old bright-eyed optimism has resurfaced. She feels no remorse or guilt over what she did; all that she wants to come of it is for people to learn from what happened to the world she destroyed, so that something like it never rises again.

POINT OF DEPARTURE: N/A
VETERAN?: No
ABILITIES: She has a robot body, but it doesn't grant any particular superhuman capabilities. Being an AI, she can process raw data much faster than a human.
INVENTORY: The clothes on her back
ANYTHING ELSE WE SHOULD KNOW?
Analogue/Hate+ have a lot of uncertain events based on the actions of the player, so here's my parameters:
- Female Investigator.
- Took *Hyun-ae back from the ship.
- Did not return *Hyun-ae's romantic feelings.
- Let *Hyun-ae have a robot body once they arrived on Earth. (She'll be using this in-game)
- Encouraged *Hyun-ae to testify about her experiences.

M A R K S;
JUSTIFICATION:
Hermit - She literally spent the last six hundred years alone with her thoughts, introspecting. Loneliness is one of the core themes of the game.
Death - *Hyun-ae's life is defined by jarring, dramatic transitions between different lives, each one a metaphorical death - Going into cryosleep to awaken in the Neo Joseon Dynasty, transforming from a girl in a free world to a slave-princess, destroying her entire world and literally dying in order to be reborn as an AI.
Judgment - Hate and forgiveness run throughout *Hyun-ae's story. A need to judge and condemn the world around her was what led her to commit genocide, and the central question of the story is about passing judgment on her in turn - can she be forgiven due to the extreme circumstnaces that pushed her over the edge, or is what she did unforgivable?

VETO:
Fool - Any naivety or innocence that lived within *Hyun-ae was crushed by the three years of suffering that led her to commit genocide. Even if she's starting fresh, she can't rid herself of that past.

Name: *Hyun-ae, formerly Kim Hyun-ae
Age: ~18 physically, ~18 mentally, ~640 chronologically
Pronouns: She/Her
Appearance:

5'3", long black hair. Apparently in her late teens. Upon closer examination, there's something slightly off about her, but it's not obvious what it is. The eyes look slightly wrong.

Things to be aware of when tagging this character:
The * in *Hyun-ae is silent - it indicates that she's an AI. She is now living in a quite convincing robot body, the Marigold '89 Hardframe.
This is *Hyun-ae's first time planetside. She may find it confusing.
The society *Hyun-ae lived in most recently before this one had no concept whatsoever of women's rights. She's very happy to be here, but may take a while to get used to being treated like a person again.

[OOC]

Backtagging: Go ahead.
Threadhopping: Ask before hopping into a serious thread. For lighter threads, go nuts.
Fourthwalling: No thanks
Offensive subjects (elaborate): Her canon deals with some seriously fucked-up shit. Accordingly, if you want to talk to her about her past, there's a high risk that the discussion might get into spoilers, mild body horror, extreme discrimination, and gendered violence.

BACKGROUND:
Whether or not there's a wiki for this, *Hyun-ae's past is convoluted enough that it's worth going over in detail.

Going through them, she uncovered the story of how the Mugunghwa fell from a modern, progressive world to a patriarchal nightmare, and agreed to testify about her actions and their context back on Earth.

PERSONALITY:
*Hyun-ae is an amalgam of the three people she was before now: Kim Hyun-ae, the Pale Bride, and *Hyun-ae the AI. All three lived distinct lives, and all three inform who she is now.

Kim Hyun-ae was born on a ship that had only just left the solar system. She was a high-energy geek, into cartoons and cosplay and possibly fanfiction.

POWER:
Robot body: *Hyun-ae is occupying a robot body, with a frame resembling a flesh-and-blood human closely enough to pass as one. Her physical strength isn't any higher than average, but she doesn't need to eat, drink or sleep to live.

Hologram projection: Non-canon power. *Hyun-ae has a program that she can give to anyone, allowing them to run it on a computer or mobile device. When the program is running, and when *Hyun-ae has access to the internet, she can connect to their computer and use it to project a hologram body. *Hyun-ae can see, hear, and talk from her hologram body, which looks enough like her that it can pass for a real person under casual (but not close) scrutiny. However, the hologram can't physically interact with anything, and can't stray more than a few meters from the projecting device.

COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:
Happy New Years, everyone! It's not exactly when I'm used to celebrating, but as long as I'm in America, I might as well try to do things the American way.

So, the big thing you're supposed to do is to reflect on how your life has changed in the last year, then make resolutions about the next year, right? Well, this was definitely a weird but exciting year for me. I made contact with humanity for the first time in forever! I left my home ship behind, and finally made it to Earth! Then, the whole imPort thing happened? Honestly, it's almost weird to think that I'm the same person I was a year ago at all. Overall, despite all the weirdness, it's just been a really, really good year. Maybe the best year of my life, when I think about it.

So, resolutions for the next year!

* I resolve to learn how to bake! I know some recipes, but I've never gotten a chance to actually try any of them.
* I resolve to get a real job! Even if I'm getting free housing from the government, I'd reall like to earn my own living for once in my life, you know?
* I resolve to visit Pyongyang this year, the city where my parents met. If not in person, hopefully I can at least find a way to get a hologram over there...
* I resolve to find a way to use my powers to help people, instead of just entertaining myself.

That's not too many, but thtey're pretty big, so I'll leave it at four. Here's hoping the rest of you all have a great year! ^~^

LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE:
Here. Disregard the narration gag about the 30th century - it's a mistake, since she was born in the 25th century.

FINAL NOTES:
*Hyun-ae's canon has several endings. The details of mine are: Investigator rejected *Hyun-ae's love confession, but brought her back to Earth as a friend. Investigator gave *Hyun-ae a robot body. Investigator let *Hyun-ae choose whether or not to testify about her actions, and she decided she would.
